Sani Pass / Ramatseliso’s Gate Pass Bookings Closed

September 23 @ 8:00 am - September 26 @ 5:00 pm

R900

Yes, as the above heading implies there is a little more to this weekend away than just Sani Pass. Our plan for this trip is to base ourselves at the Cobham Forest Station Camp Site just outside Himeville for the duration. To get there we will all meet at the RV in Harrismith at 10am on the morning of day 1 (23 September) and then follow a country rural road route all the way to Himeville and Cobham. No toll roads or major routes at all.

Cobham is situated in the Southern Maloti-Drakensberg Park, South Africa’s first cultural and environmental World Heritage Site. The exceptional natural beauty of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site is evident in its soaring basaltic buttresses, golden sandstone ramparts, rolling high altitude grasslands, steep-sided river valleys and rocky gorges. Dominated by Hodgson’s Peaks which enclose the Giants Cup, Cobham is a 52,000 ha section of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park in the southern Drakensberg adjacent to the town of Himeville and not too far from Sani Pass.

The Cobham State Forest area contains vast expanses of grassland which turn from emerald green in spring and summer to shades of gold, brown and purple in autumn and winter. The grasslands are interspersed with rocky outcrops / boulders, streams and rivers and indigenous forests.

The Cobham Forest Station Campsite offers rustic camping with incredable views of the valleys and mountains of the Southern Berg in an open area with no specifically demarcated sites. Visitors can set up camp anywhere within the designated area. Please note that the camp is not electrified and there is no 220v mains power available, so plan accordingly. There is a small ablution block with hot and cold water, and toilets. The campsite is caravan and trailer friendly.

On one of the days we are there, we will do a day trip into and up Sani Pass. Those wishing to visit the pub at the top for lunch, please remember you will need your passport, and have cash on you pay the toll fee at the border (+-R50), to gain access to this location as you do pass into Lesotho. Whether a Covis-19 certificate is required for this will be confirmed closer to the time.

On the second day we will again do a day trip. This time we will go through the Kingscote area of rural southern KZN before turning west into the rural areas and then climb the Ramateliso’s Gate Pass up to another Lesotho border post. This trip, just like Sani, is a there and back route but we will not go through the border. At the border we will turn back and find a suitable lunch stop for a picnic lunch somewhere on the pass during the course of the day. For this route you will need to be self-sufficient as there are no restaurants or pubs along the way. It can also be windy up on top so be prepared for cold weather as well.

Because Cobham Forest Station also allows for day walks and the exploring of the rivers, streams, valleys, and trails in the area, those who do not wish to do any of the day trips are free to explore Cobham on foot, or visit the villages of Himeville and Underberg as an alternative.

Please note that this trip is limited to a maximum of 10 vehicles due to booking limitations. So if you are interested book early.

Plans will be finalized and timings confirmed closer to the time, and are subject to change due to weather conditions or COVID regulation changes.

We look forward to seeing you there.

This event is fully booked.
